Silver Legend accelerates NPC simulations with LUMI-assisted AI workflow

We helped Finnish game developer Silver Legend to bring non-playable game characters to the next level by moving the pipeline to open-source solutions using the Finnish LUMI supercomputer.

Silver Legend is a Finnish indie game company creating solutions for game development pipelines leveraging AI. The product they are building and also integrating into their own game, Grey Legend: Survivors, involves a deep simulation of personality of non-playable characters (NPCs) through procedurally generated dialogue. This allows these NPCs to act differently based on their personality, internal motivation and mood. Among the topics used in game, there are the harsh realities of surviving in the post-apocalyptic world, such as violence, crime, despair etc. Many other topics can also be procedurally generated with the AI workflow from Silver Legend.

Challenge

The generation of data for NPCs was done using proprietary solutions (Google Gemini). Creating a single topic took approximately four hours, and when building a prototype of the pipeline, example dialogues had to be created multiple times, making it not cost-effective. Additionally, local tools running on Silver Legend’s own computers were used to monitor the process, even though the models were running on Google’s servers. A major challenge was to move the development pipeline from these proprietary, expensive, and inflexible setups to open source tools that could be used in high-performance computing environments.

Proposed solution

When Jyri Sydänmetsä (CEO) spoke with Mimer’s Björn Flintberg about a potential collaboration, he was referred to Mimer experts Daniel Medeiros and Mickaël Zehren. They helped Silver Legend to apply for the Playground Call on the Finnish LUMI supercomputer and obtained 5,000 hours.

The solution involved deploying language model endpoints from LUMI that could be used locally to generate the data with larger context sizes, alongside a complete AI Agent team using different models for different agents:

  • Simo: Dialogue Team Lead
  • Aino: Writer
  • Ilmari: Balancer
  • Sampo: Technical Designer
  • Kyllikki: QA

Everything runs automatically on the OpenClaw environment on the server. If new topics are added to version control, by the next day the team has produced and pushed dialogues for that topic. Simo handles the whole process, and other team members are activated when they are needed.

From 30 years to 16 days

Using LUMI brought the needed flexibility for their processes as well as more GPUs, which allowed for more characters/topics be generated with more complex models without the limitations of proprietary solutions. Silver Legend’s target is to create dialogues for 100 topics for public demo of the game. For a human writer, it would take an estimated 30 years to create all of those. With this AI workflow, the same amount of data can be generated in just 16 days! Currently, the agents run a maximum of 8 hours a day, so it takes 50 days total, which is significantly less than 30 years. Using LUMI brought the needed flexibility and computational power to make this a reality without the limitations of proprietary solutions.
